Da Hong Pao (translated Big Red Robe 大紅袍 ) is a heavily oxidized tea that falls within the Oolong family. Even at a glance one can tell this tea is dark and rich with a deep flavour. Grown in the Fujian province. Normally brought out for guests of honour within the China region due to its high quality.The story behind this tea (every Chinese tea has one and we love including them!) is that during the Ming dynasty, the emperors mother at the time fell sick but was cured due to a certain tea - and to help both preserve and remember which bush these leaves came from, big red robes were placed over those bushes. Those very same bushes still reportedly exist today with price tags of their leaves going for up to 1 million USD per Kilogram!pesticide free China

Brewing
  1. Preheat your cup by pouring boiling water inside. Rotate the water around so that it has touched all sides to ensure equal distribution.
  2. Normally two teaspoons are used for one teapot. This equates to around two reasonable sized pinches.
  3. 90 to 95C water is traditionally used.
  4. A steeping time of 1 minute is commonplace but feel free to experiment.
  5. You should be able to get 4 to 6 infusions from this tea, and with each infusion please increase steeping time by 1 minute.

Cautionary Notes

Caffeine: moderate per cup; Limit if you're sensitive, pregnant or breastfeeding (generally speaking, keep total caffeine under 200 mg/day during pregnancy).

Reflux or sensitive stomach: Strong/very roasted infusion on an empty stomach may cause heartburn - brew lighter and drink with food.

Iron absorption: Tannins may decrease non-HAEm iron uptake; Avoid iron-rich meals and supplements and leave 1-2 hours between meals & supplements.

Kidney stones: tea contains oxalates; If you have a family history of calcioxalate stones, moderate intake and drink plenty of water.

Medication timing: Some medicines absorbed through tea may be impeded by it (levothyroxine, iron or mineral supplements, for example). Take medicines with water and separate by at least 2 hours.

Allergies/sensitivities: Occasionally, but stop if you experience any adverse symptoms.

Taste Profile

Aroma: Rich in minerals and deeply roasted, it has notes of cocoa, toasted grain and a faint orchid sweetness.

Taste: Dark chocolate, roasted chestnut, floral undertones with a soft mineral edge typical of Wuyi cliff teas.

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied and velvety with a dry warmth lingering.

Finish: It is clean, toasty and long lasting with notes of caramelised stone fruit.

Liquor Colour: Deep amber-bronze.

Lovely With: Enjoy it neat or paired with roasted nuts, mild chocolate desserts, or creamy dishes to highlight its roasted complexity.

How to make Da Hong Pao Tea:
Da Hong Pao is a famous Wuyi Rock Oolong from Fujian, China. It is grown in the rocky cliffs of Mount Wuyi and is known for its full-roasted and mineral-rich flavors.

Is it caffeinated?
Yes. As an oolong tea it has moderate caffeine - less than black tea but more than most green teas.

Do you add flavours or sugars?
No. Real Da Hong Pao is 100% tea, which develops the toasty, floral, and mineral notes with careful roasting.

Does it get reheated?
YES - reheat gently if pre-brewed - avoid boiling. Or, enjoy cold - refrigerate promptly and eat within 24 hours.

How do I store it, and how long does it keep?
Close tightly, keep cool, dry, and away from light. Da Hong Pao can keep for 24 months when stored properly.

How much is shipping?

Couriers Please Shipping is $5.95 for orders under $60 and free for all orders over $60.

Australia Post is always at cost. Orders going to Po Box or Parcel Locker address may be locked in to Australia Post.

What are your transit times?

We dispatch within 24-48 hours (sometimes much faster) and from there we'll see 1-3 days transit to most metro locations within Australia excluding WA and NT which can take a week or so.

We also offer express post which will help speed up the process, at cost with no handling fees. These are always sent as priority and packed first.

Are there any discounts available?

We're quite generous with our loyalty programs, and the best way to take advantage of them is to create an account here. Also if you subscribe to our newsletter you'll gain access to members only discounts, rewards and an initial 10% off first order.

Are your teas certified organic?

Up until recently we were certified organic but due to rising administration costs and the difficulty of maintaining certification we've put this on hold for now. Our suppliers and farms remain the same without any change but just now label things are organic, pesticide free or wildcrafted.

This also allows us to maintain our current pricing without any increases which we feel is more important at this time.
