What is Kava Powder?

Derived from the root of the Kava plant, Kava powder is native to the South Pacific region. Consumed for centuries by members of the Fiji, Vanuatu, and Samoan cultures, Kava powder is known for its powerful relaxation effects and its properties as a mild sedative.

To obtain powder from the Kava plant you must first peel and dry the roots of the plant into a fine powder. The active ingredients found in Kava powder as kavalactones, which interact with the central nervous system of the user to produce a pleasing calming effect without compromising mental clarity.

How do I use Kava Powder?

Let’s check out how you can use Kava powder by brewing it into an earthy beverage!

  1. Use a measuring cup or scale to determine the desired amount of Kava powder. A sensible starting dose is around 1 to 2 tablespoons, but individual tolerance may vary.
  2. You'll need a large bowl or basin for mixing, a strainer or cheesecloth, and a muslin bag or nylon stocking to strain the Kava later.
  3. Place the measured Kava powder into the bowl and add cold or lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water, as excessive heat may diminish the effectiveness of kavalactones. Use a whisk or knead the kava with your hands to thoroughly mix it with the water. Continue this process for about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Pour the Kava mixture through a strainer or cheesecloth into a separate bowl, separating the liquid from the solid particles. You can use a muslin bag or nylon stocking to further strain the liquid and remove finer particles.
  5. The strained liquid is your Kava beverage. It's recommended to enjoy Kava on an empty stomach for optimal effects!
